Hey Guys, Watch This!
Monoblogue 4
As a pubstar, one of the most impressive and inspiring parts of Team Fortress 2 is a good frag video. The first big one for was Reptiles frag movie, directed by Jh, and after watching this, I became interested enough to start playing TF2 more seriously, especially as a Soldier. That said, there are a few key things required that make a good Frag Movie:
1) Skill
If you arent showing off you playing well, then you are doing it wrong. Intelligent use of your weapons, consistent good aim, being well placed in the map and using height or pickups to your advantage. If you can mix it all together and show you doing it all in one small clip, over and over, rather than a large number of smaller clips, it shows the audience that they weren’t lucky coincidences. Additionally, using loads of kills against bots or public players is not impressive, as the overall challenge is severely lower.
2) Editing Choices
Its the unnecessary additions that can make a good frag movie into a great one. 3rd person camera angles, syncing the music with the frags, using light to emphasise certain areas on your screen and fading between clips cleverly. All of these factors can help an audience immerse themselves with the movie, and help them forget that out of everything they see, you are always going to win. Dont forget to make all your game recordings as high quality as you can get it, and dont forget to remove things like no weapon model, net_graph, in game text or steam friends!
3) Variety
A Soldier frag movie shouldn’t consist of airshot after airshot (after airshot). If its predictable, its boring, and it certainly doenst help to impress the audience if they can see you do it repeatedly. Mix in those airshots with good teamwork, good map control and good prediction to make them more worthwhile. If you have done anything interesting with other classes, try to fit them in somewhere just to keep things moving nicely.
4) Music
Make sure you are choosing good music, and that you are linking the style of music with the style of play, as well as syncing hits with the beat. A perfectly good movie can be ruined by having to put up with horrible music. Whilst this is purely objective, there are some clear losers to take note of. A frag movie can tell people how you play, as well as what you are like as a person, and music choice can tell them a lot about the latter, but there are some definite choices that should be avoided anyway! In my opinion you should always try to avoid music where the singer is really just screaming through the whole thing, or anything else that can frustrate people into closing your movie before you’ve killed anyone.
