TF2 on L4D Engine

When Half-Life 2 was released in 2004, it was the first time people played on Valve’s brand new gaming engine: Source. Since then many games have been made that are powered by the Source Engine, including Counter-Strike: Source, Portal, Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead. But there isn’t just one single Source Engine – there are several versions.

  • First version: HL2, HL2 ep1, CS:Source
  • Orange Box version: TF2, Portal, HL2 ep2, DoD:Source
  • L4D version: Left4Dead

Many users with multi-core CPUs have been experiencing better performance in L4D than in TF2 (despite the fact that there can be like 50 zombies on the screen at the same time). The reason should apparently be that the L4D version of the Source Engine is much better at utilizing multi-core CPUs. Now people are requesting Valve to convert TF2 from the Orange Box Source Engine to the L4D Source Engine, hoping it will improve performance in TF2. One user supposedly sent a mail to Gabe Newell (founder of Valve) asking if they will do exactly that, and he answered yes. If that actually happens, maybe it’ll be the end of black screenshots and alt+tab crashes?

On L4D I can see >50 zombies on my screen at one time with NO FPS lag whatsoever.
My theory is, if this is put onto TF2… we’re gonna see a lot of improvement in some players who are playing on dire computers. 🙂

not to mention the fact that it takes about 10 sec to start l4d, and up to 30 for tf2 😛
